A video of four rescued kittens, aptly named “Graybies,” and their young mother has melted millions of hearts on Instagram.
With an impressive 2.8 million views, the footage was shared by Cameron King, a devoted cat owner and foster parent who runs the Instagram page @benjaminbutterscotch. The Graybies, known for their striking gray coats, were found hiding in “a rotten pile of junk and old boxes.”
The touching video captures the moment King learned of the situation and stepped in to save the four kittens and their 6-month-old mother.
Followed by more recent footage of the grown kittens celebrating their first birthday on June 21. In the caption, she refers to the cats named Macy Gray, Dorian Gray, Christian Gray, and Gandalf the Gray as the “most amazing litter.” However, raising them has come with its challenges.
He wrote: “It’s been a really whirlwind year as Gandalf has been determined to burn some of his [nine] lives!”
First, he was diagnosed with a viral disease known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), then he broke his back leg while running down the stairs in an attempt to escape his FIP medicine, which the caption says is expensive. Most recently, he swallowed two feet of string in his foster home and had to undergo emergency surgery.
“Fortunately, Gandalf is resilient and strong,” King said in the caption. “He is still doing well and all signs point to him living a long and happy life.”
Now that he has been nursed back to health and the others are doing well, they are up for adoption. King hopes that sharing their journey will help them find a place to call home. So far, the video has received over 244,000 likes and over 1,100 comments.
“Mom must have lived with someone at some point. There’s no way she’s this cold, locked in a cage with her kids being taken and moved,” one user said.
Another wrote: “Thank you for seeing their value, for saving them and for giving them a home and love.”
A third commenter suggested, “They should be together. Imagine the pain they feel when they are separated. It’s not fair. And if they are adopted, please consider giving them away as a couple. Don’t separate those siblings! They have strong bonds.”
The Graybies’ story is a testament to the incredible impact that kindness and community support can have. As the kittens and their mom continue to thrive, their journey serves as a reminder of the power of love and compassion to give animals a second chance at life. According to Peta, there are an estimated 60 to 100 million homeless cats in America, who depend on humans to feed, water, and shelter them. Sadly, not all of them are rescued by good Samaritans like King, so life on the streets is often cut short by contagious and deadly diseases.
