Traveling with pets on airplanes

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says individual airlines are allowed to decide whether their passengers can bring pets on board. Passengers should contact their carrier before traveling to confirm the airline’s pet policy.

“If an airline allows you to bring your pet in the cabin, we consider the carrier to be carry-on baggage and you must follow all carry-on baggage rules,” the FAA says.

The pet transport container must meet the following requirements, as specified by the FAA:

  • Small enough to fit under the seat without obstructing the flow of passengers toward the main aisle of the plane.
  • Stowed properly before the last passenger door of the plane closes, so that the plane can leave the gate.
  • Remain properly stowed at all times while the aircraft is moving on the airport surface, as well as during takeoff and landing.
  • Owners must follow the flight attendants’ instructions regarding the proper stowage of their pet’s carrier.

Most airlines typically have additional policies and procedures to follow in addition to the above FAA regulations if they allow pets on board, from a limit on the number of pets allowed to a requirement that the pet be kept in its carrier for the entire flight, the FAA says. Contact your airline for more information before your travels.

If your airline does not allow pets on board, your pet will have to travel in the hold.

The International Air Transport Association says: “Don’t worry, cats and dogs travel better this way because it is quieter and they will rest in a dark environment. Despite all the fears about air travel with pets, millions of animals are transported safely every year.”
